چکیده

A previous paper by the authors [FH93] noted that there was a strong tendency to obtain near-repeated knots in their algorithm for least squares approximation of scattered data by multiquadric functions. In this paper we observe that this leads naturally to the inclusion of derivatives of the multiquadric basis function in the approximation, and give an algorithm for accomplishing this. A comparison of the results obtained with this algorithm and the previous one is made. While the multiple knot algorithm usually has the advantage in terms of accuracy and computational stability, there are datasets for which this is reversed. * Department of Mathematics, Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, CA 93943 t FB Informatik, Universitit Kaiserslautern, 67653 Kaiserslautern, Germany t Department of Computer Science, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287 This work was performed in part while the first and last authors were visiting Universitit Kaiserslautern and were supported by a DFG-grant Ka 477/13-1.

Multiquadric Prewavelets on Nonequally Spaced Knots in One Dimension

In this paper, we identify univariate prewavelets on spaces spanned by translates of multiquadric functions and other radial basis functions with nonequally spaced centers (or "knots"). Although the multiquadric function and its relations are our prime examples, the theory is sufficiently broad to admit prewavelets from other radial basis function spaces as well.

Stable least squares MQ approximation by local thinning

In this note a local thinning of the data locations is proposed, in order to construct a least squares multiquadric approximant stable and close to the multiquadric interpolant

Suitability of Parametric Shepard Interpolation for Nonrigid Image Registration

Shepard interpolation is known to produce flat horizontal spots at and around data points. The phenomenon is caused by Shepard’s use of rational inversedistance weight functions, producing similar values around data points. In this paper, a parametric version of Shepard interpolation is introduced that avoids flat horizontal spots. Because Shepard interpolation or its parametric version does no...

Free-Knot Polynomial Splines with Confidence Intervals

We construct approximate confidence intervals for a nonparametric regression function, using polynomial splines with free-knot locations. The number of knots is determined by generalized cross-validation. The estimates of knot locations and coefficients are obtained through a non-linear least squares solution that corresponds to the maximum likelihood estimate. Confidence intervals are then con...

Optimal Designs for Free Knot Least Squares Splines

In this paper D-optimal designs for free knot least squares spline estimation are investigated. In contrast to most of the literature on optimal design for spline regression models it is assumed that the knots of the spline are also estimated from the data, which yields to optimal design problems for nonlinear models. In some cases local D-optimal designs can be found explicitly. Moreover, it i...
